Two fishermen from Gisborne are facing legal action after being apprehended with a total of 157 undersized pāua. Fisheries officers conducted a routine inspection at Waihau Beach, located approximately 40 kilometers north of Gisborne, where they discovered the illegal catch.

According to Jordan Cooper, the manager for Fisheries New Zealand’s Gisborne, Whakatāne, and Central Districts, all the pāua recovered were below the legal size limit. The smallest specimen measured just 60 millimeters, significantly less than the mandated minimum size of 125 millimeters. Cooper emphasized the importance of adhering to these regulations to ensure the sustainability of marine life.

“Our fishery officers patrol a large coastal area, and with summer approaching, we anticipate an increase in fishing activity. Therefore, you can expect to see our presence along the coasts and beaches more frequently,” Cooper stated.

This incident underscores the ongoing efforts by Fisheries New Zealand to monitor and protect marine resources. The legal size limit for pāua is designed to promote healthy populations and ensure that harvesting practices do not compromise the species’ future.

Both fishermen are now subject to prosecution, and this case serves as a reminder of the critical role that regulations play in maintaining ecological balance in New Zealand’s fisheries. The authorities encourage the public to be aware of and comply with fishing regulations to support sustainable practices.
