Hawke’s Bay secured a hard-fought victory over Taranaki, winning 26-12 in their National Provincial Championship (NPC) quarterfinal on October 14, 2023, at McLean Park in Napier. With this win, the Magpies advance to the semifinals, maintaining their quest for a first-ever top-flight NPC title.

The match marked a significant turnaround for Hawke’s Bay, who had suffered consecutive defeats to Taranaki in recent encounters, including a 38-24 loss just three weeks ago. Early in the match, Taranaki dominated possession and territory, controlling 91% territory and 67% possession in the first 15 minutes. Despite this, they managed only a single penalty through Josh Jacomb.

As the match progressed, Hawke’s Bay began to find their rhythm. The game ignited in the final minutes of the first half, with the hosts scoring two tries to take a 14-6 lead at halftime. Le Roux Malan opened the scoring with a try in the 28th minute, followed by Miracle Faiilagi in the 34th minute.

Despite facing challenges, including two yellow cards—one for Folau Fakatava in the 38th minute and another for Isaia Walker-Leawere in the 71st—Hawke’s Bay managed to keep Taranaki scoreless in the second half. Taranaki’s co-captain, Kaylum Boshier, who was initially absent due to injury, contributed to their efforts but could not prevent the defeat.

Hawke’s Bay’s resilience was evident as they executed crucial plays, particularly in the second half. Lincoln McClutchie scored in the 53rd minute, extending their lead. Although Taranaki clawed back with another penalty from Jacomb, the Magpies responded decisively. Sam Smith sealed the game with a try in the 66th minute, showcasing a powerful run that reflected the team’s determination.

The match concluded with Hawke’s Bay’s defense holding firm, despite being a man down. Taranaki’s attempts to close the gap failed, resulting in their elimination from the tournament for the second consecutive year.

Hawke’s Bay will now look forward to their semifinal match, buoyed by this historic win and the hope of claiming their first NPC title.
