Evelyn Webster, a celebrated tennis player and national champion, passed away in late August at the age of 101. Known for her remarkable achievements in the sport during the 1940s, Webster left an indelible mark on New Zealand tennis, both as a competitor and a contributor to the sport’s community.

Born Evelyn Attwood, she captured the junior girls’ national title in 1941 and clinched the national ladies’ singles championship in 1948. Her impressive skills on the court set the stage for a career that would take her from New Zealand to England.

In 1950, Webster made a significant decision to sail to England, where she lived from 1951 to 1955. During her time in London, she worked full-time as a secretary while continuing to pursue her passion for tennis. Competing in four Wimbledon tournaments, she showcased her talent in both singles and doubles events. Despite these high-profile competitions, her most notable successes came from county tennis, where she triumphed in several tournaments.

Upon her return to New Zealand in late 1954, Evelyn married Eric Webster. Together, they became instrumental in establishing an anchorage at Smokehouse Bay, located in Port Fitzroy on Great Barrier Island. This area, which became known as Webster’s Wonderland, remains a testament to their commitment to enhancing the local community.

Evelyn Webster’s legacy extends beyond her tennis accolades. Her contributions to the sport and her community continue to be felt, inspiring future generations of athletes. The tennis world mourns her passing while celebrating a life filled with remarkable achievements and lasting impact.
