Hawke’s Bay secured a spot in the semifinals of the National Provincial Championship (NPC) after defeating Taranaki 26-12 at McLean Park in Napier on September 30, 2023. This victory marks a significant turnaround for the Magpies, who had previously suffered four consecutive losses to their local rivals.

The match began with Taranaki dominating possession and territory, holding 91% territory and 67% possession in the first fifteen minutes. Despite their strong start, Taranaki only managed to put three points on the board via a penalty from Josh Jacomb.

With the first half nearing its conclusion, Hawke’s Bay turned the tide. Le Roux Malan scored the opening try in the 28th minute, followed by Miracle Faiilagi crossing the line just before halftime. The Magpies took a 14-6 lead into the break, defying the initial statistics that suggested a different outcome.

The second half saw Hawke’s Bay maintain their momentum. Lincoln McClutchie added to their score in the 53rd minute, and Sam Smith sealed the victory with a try in the 66th minute. Taranaki, despite their efforts, struggled to convert their opportunities into points, finishing with only penalties to show for their dominance.

Hawke’s Bay’s defense was crucial, particularly after losing two players to yellow cards. Folau Fakatava and Isaia Walker-Leawere were sidelined for high tackles, yet the Magpies held firm against Taranaki’s attempts to score. The visitors had two tries disallowed by the TMO, further highlighting the resilience of Hawke’s Bay.

The Magpies’ victory not only avenged previous losses to Taranaki but also kept alive their hopes for a first-ever top-flight NPC title. The team, having come close in prior seasons, now looks ahead with optimism as they prepare for the semifinals.

As the final whistle blew, the atmosphere at McLean Park was electric, with supporters celebrating a hard-fought win. Hawke’s Bay will face a new challenge in the semifinals, but their performance against Taranaki has certainly set a positive tone for the remainder of the tournament.
