Auckland Central Fire Station Reopens Following Asbestos Clearance

Auckland’s central fire station is back in operation following the clearance of asbestos concerns. Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) confirmed that tests conducted on dust samples returned negative results, allowing the facility on Pitt Street to reopen after a brief closure on Friday, July 7, 2023.
The closure was prompted by a positive test result for asbestos found in an unused utility room during inspections in July. The findings led to immediate safety measures, including a deep cleaning of the station’s vehicles and a temporary relocation of the fire crews to the regional headquarters on Poynton Terrace.
FENZ Deputy National Commander Megan Stiffler reported that subsequent air samples taken from the station indicated no presence of asbestos. This positive outcome has enabled the fire station to resume its critical operations, ensuring the safety and readiness of the fire services in the Auckland region.
Stiffler expressed relief at the quick resolution of the situation, highlighting the importance of maintaining safety standards for both firefighters and the community they serve. The response team acted swiftly to address the issue, underscoring FENZ’s commitment to workplace safety.
With operations now fully restored, the Auckland Central Fire Station is prepared to continue its essential role in protecting the local community from emergencies.
