Police Increase Patrols During Gang Tangi in Hawke’s Bay

A significant police presence is established in Hawke’s Bay as two gang tangi take place today. Large gatherings of gang members and their associates are expected in both Waipawa and Flaxmere, prompting local authorities to implement additional safety measures.
Hawke’s Bay Area Commander Inspector Lincoln Sycamore announced that police have intensified patrols throughout the region. “We expect to see a large number of gang members and associates moving around the region, and police will have additional resources available to manage any issues that may arise,” he stated.
The police aim to provide a balance between allowing whānau and friends the space to grieve while ensuring the safety of the broader community. Sycamore emphasized that communication has been established with gang leaders, and police will take enforcement action when necessary.
The tangi tradition, essential in Māori culture, often draws large crowds and can lead to heightened tensions. Law enforcement’s proactive approach aims to mitigate potential conflicts and maintain public order during these sensitive events.
As the gatherings are underway, local residents are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to authorities. The police are dedicated to ensuring a peaceful atmosphere, while also prepared to respond to any challenges that may arise.
With the increased police presence and clear communication with community leaders, authorities hope to foster an environment conducive to respectful mourning while prioritizing the safety of all residents in Hawke’s Bay.
