Harshadbhai Patel, a revered figure in New Zealand’s Indian community, passed away peacefully at home on October 8, 2023, at the age of 75. Surrounded by family, Patel dedicated his life to service, music, and community connection. Born on 11 August 1950 in Onjal, India, he relocated to New Zealand as a young man, where he made significant contributions both professionally and socially.

As a trained biochemist, Patel worked for Watercare and its predecessor organizations, ensuring the safety and quality of Auckland’s drinking water. His commitment to this crucial responsibility was marked by a strong sense of pride and dedication. Beyond his professional achievements, Patel was deeply passionate about music and community engagement.

Patel was a talented musician, known for his harmonium skills and beautiful singing. His performances at community events were more than mere entertainment; they fostered joy and a sense of belonging, uniting people from diverse backgrounds. In recognition of his contributions, he received the Kiwi Indian Community Service Excellence Award in 2019 during the Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame Awards.

A Champion of Arts and Culture

A staunch supporter of the performing arts, Patel played an instrumental role in establishing the Centre for Indian Performing Arts (CIPA) as part of the Auckland Indian Association at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre. He believed in the importance of music, dance, and theatre for preserving and promoting Indian culture in New Zealand. His tireless efforts provided a platform for young and emerging artists to showcase their talents.

Patel’s leadership was pivotal in transforming Auckland’s Navratri dandiya celebrations into one of the largest and most vibrant cultural festivals in New Zealand. Each year, his passion and enthusiasm helped expand the festival, enhancing its energy and inclusiveness. Just weeks before his passing, Patel attended the Navratri dandiya nights at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre despite his ill health. Witnessing the event filled him with joy, as he sat close to the musicians, tapping along to the rhythms that he had nurtured for so long.

A Lasting Legacy

Harshadbhai Patel is survived by his devoted wife, Pushpaben, and his children, Nilesh and Rupal, along with their spouses, Meeta and Pretesh. He leaves behind his beloved grandchildren, Rayaan and Avaiya. A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held on October 14 at 3 PM at Morrisons Funeral Home, located at 220 Universal Drive, Henderson. The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Cancer Society.

Patel will be remembered not only as a community leader and a gifted musician but also as a mentor to many within the Indian diaspora. He embodied kindness and sincerity, and his legacy will continue to resonate in each note of music and every act of service that reflects his spirit. May he rest in peace, and may his family find strength during this challenging time.
