Qatar Triumphs Over UAE 2-1 to Secure Historic World Cup Spot

Qatar achieved a significant milestone by defeating the United Arab Emirates (UAE) 2-1, securing their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This victory marks Qatar’s first qualification based on merit for the prestigious tournament, following their previous appearance as hosts in the 2022 edition.
The decisive match took place on October 14, 2025, at the packed Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium in Doha. With a must-win scenario, Qatar delivered a strong performance under the leadership of head coach Julen Lopetegui, energizing their supporters throughout the intense encounter.
Key Moments Define the Match
After a tense first half that ended without goals, Qatar’s captain Boualem Khoukhi broke the deadlock in the 49th minute with a well-placed header. This crucial goal set the tone for the remainder of the match, as Qatar continued to apply pressure.
In the 74th minute, midfielder Pedro Miguel extended the lead to 2-0, converting a superb set-piece delivered by Akram Afif, who played a pivotal role in both goals. The atmosphere in the stadium was electric as Qatar appeared to have the match securely in hand.
However, Qatar faced a setback late in the game when Tarek Salman, who had entered the match as a substitute, received a yellow card that was later upgraded to red following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review in the 89th minute. This decision added to the tension as the UAE sought a comeback.
UAE’s Late Charge Falls Short
With only a draw needed to advance, the UAE intensified their efforts, culminating in a goal from Sultan Adil in the eighth minute of stoppage time. Adil scored from a pass by Fabio Lima, reigniting hopes for the UAE during a dramatic final phase of the match.
Despite the late goal, Qatar held firm against the UAE’s pressure, successfully protecting their lead to secure a historic qualification. The victory was a testament to their resilience and determination under the spotlight.
Although the UAE faced disappointment, they still hold a chance to qualify for the World Cup. As runners-up in Group A, they will now compete in a two-legged play-off against either Saudi Arabia or Iraq. The winner of that tie will have the opportunity to advance to the FIFA Play-Off Tournament, which offers a final chance for qualification to the 2026 finals.
This match not only serves as a significant achievement for Qatar but also reinforces the competitive nature of football in the region as both teams strive for success on the world stage.
