New Plymouth will welcome rock enthusiasts from across the country for the National Rock and Mineral Show, scheduled for Labour Weekend from October 25 to October 27, 2024. The event will take place at the Plymouth International Hotel, opening daily from 9 AM to 4 PM. With an entry fee of $5 for adults and free admission for children, the show promises to be a captivating experience for all ages.

This annual event, hosted by the Taranaki Lapidary and Mineral Club, will feature over 135 entries across eight competition categories. Approximately 40 exhibitors will showcase their finds, including polished stones, fossils, and unique jewellery pieces. Club president Ian Larsen emphasized the national aspect of the show, noting participants will come from various regions to share their passion for rock collecting.

In addition to the competitive exhibits, attendees can explore 36 show cases displaying an array of geological treasures. Rob Booth, the club treasurer, highlighted the diversity of club members, with some focusing on polishing and displaying rocks, others specializing in fossils, and a third group dedicated to jewellery-making. The Booths, who create beautiful jewellery, particularly enjoy working with rhyolite, a volcanic rock rich in silica.

Children will find plenty of activities to engage them, including a lucky dip and a chance to extract rocks from ice blocks, adding an interactive element to the experience. Club member Annette Larsen, who also edits the club’s newsletter, explained that the event is not just about showcasing polished stones but also about fostering a community of rock enthusiasts, regardless of their experience level.

The Taranaki Rock, Mineral and Crystal Show promises to be both educational and entertaining, offering a unique opportunity for participants and visitors to connect over their shared interest in geology. Whether you are a seasoned collector or a newcomer curious about the hobby, this event is set to provide an enriching experience for everyone involved.
