New Plymouth to Showcase National Rock and Mineral Treasures

New Plymouth is set to host a national rock and mineral show over Labour Weekend, showcasing a variety of geological wonders. The event, organized by the Taranaki Lapidary and Mineral Club, will take place at the Plymouth International Hotel from October 25 to 27, 2024, running daily from 09:00 to 16:00. Attendees will experience a vibrant display of rocks, minerals, and gemstones, but notably absent will be the commonly ridiculed “leaverite” rocks.
According to Annette Larsen, who manages the club’s newsletter, many novice collectors mistakenly gather leaverites, only to be advised by seasoned enthusiasts to “leave it right there.” Her husband, Ian Larsen, president of the club, adds that their passion for collecting rocks has spanned about 16 years, during which they have traveled extensively across the country in search of stunning specimens.
The Taranaki Lapidary and Mineral Club caters to three main types of enthusiasts. As Rob Booth, the club treasurer, explains, some members focus on polishing and displaying rocks, while others delve into fossil collecting, an area where Taranaki excels. Booth and his wife, Carole Booth, represent the third group, specializing in handcrafted jewellery made from local materials, including rhyolite, a silica-rich volcanic rock.
The upcoming rock and mineral show will feature approximately 40 exhibitors presenting a total of 135 entries across eight competition categories. Attendees can look forward to 36 showcase exhibits, along with various stalls offering unique items for purchase. In addition, there will be raffles and interactive activities for younger visitors, such as a lucky dip and the chance to extract rocks from ice blocks, aimed at sparking interest in geology among children.
Entry to the Taranaki Rock, Mineral and Crystal Show is priced at $5 for adults, while children can enter free of charge. This event not only highlights the rich geological diversity of New Zealand but also fosters a sense of community among rock and mineral enthusiasts from all corners of the country. As Ian Larsen emphasizes, this is a national show that promises to be both educational and entertaining for all ages.
