Robbers Strike Louvre Museum, Steal Valuable Jewellery
Robbers broke into the Louvre Museum in central Paris on Sunday morning, stealing jewellery of yet undetermined value. According to a source close to the investigation, thieves arrived on scooters equipped with small chainsaws and used a goods lift to access the targeted area. Following the incident, the museum, renowned as the world’s most-visited museum, has been closed for the day.
The robbery occurred shortly after the museum opened its doors to visitors. Rachida Dati, France’s Minister of Culture, confirmed the incident in a post on X, stating, “No injuries were reported. I am on site alongside museum staff and the police. Investigations are ongoing.”
The Louvre, which houses iconic artworks including Leonardo da Vinci‘s Mona Lisa, announced on its official channels that it would remain closed due to “exceptional reasons.” The museum’s decision to close reflects the severity of the event and the ongoing investigation into the theft.
While details about the stolen items remain sparse, authorities are currently assessing the overall value of the jewellery taken. Investigators have not disclosed the exact number of individuals involved in the robbery, but the police are actively pursuing leads.
As the situation develops, the Louvre’s management is cooperating fully with law enforcement. The museum is expected to provide updates regarding its reopening and any additional information on the investigation. Visitors hoping to experience the world-renowned collection will need to wait as security measures are assessed and reinforced.
This incident marks a significant security challenge for the Louvre, which has faced similar threats in the past. The museum, located in the heart of Paris, attracts millions of visitors each year and is a vital cultural institution for both France and the international community.
Authorities urge anyone with information related to the robbery to come forward as investigations continue. The museum’s future security protocols will likely be scrutinized in light of this incident to prevent future occurrences.
