On July 11, 2023, a boat trailer detached from a vehicle, colliding with an oncoming car driven by Nateisha-Kurstyn Hana-Wetere, 23, from New Plymouth. Emergency services pronounced her dead at the scene.
Police have reported that a 19-year-old man has been charged with dangerous driving causing death. He is scheduled to appear in Te Kuiti District Court on November 3. The crash also resulted in injuries to four other individuals.
Te Huia Brown-Hana, Hana-Wetere’s brother, shared details of the incident with RNZ in August. He stated that his sister was returning to Auckland after a holiday in New Plymouth when the collision occurred near Te Kūiti.
This incident raises serious concerns regarding road safety, particularly in relation to the secure transport of trailers.
