All Blacks Assistant Coach Jason Holland Steps Down After Bledisloe Win

Jason Holland has resigned from his position as assistant coach of the All Blacks, confirming his decision to head coach Scott Robertson following the team’s victory over Australia in the second Bledisloe Cup test held in Perth. The All Blacks secured a decisive win with a score of 28-14, marking a successful outing as they prepare for the upcoming northern hemisphere tour.
The announcement was made to the players on the first day of their training camp, which is part of the preparations for their remaining four test matches in 2025. Holland will continue to fulfill his responsibilities as the team’s set-piece attack and backs coach during the upcoming fixtures against Ireland, Scotland, England, and Wales.
Reflecting on Coaching Journey
In a statement, Holland expressed his feelings about stepping away from the role, saying, “It’s been a huge privilege to coach the All Blacks and represent New Zealand alongside some great people, both players and management.” He acknowledged the personal reflection that led to his decision, particularly with his contract approaching renewal. “Ultimately, this is about what gets me excited about being a coach,” he continued.
Holland, who previously led the Hurricanes in Super Rugby, noted that the decision was not made lightly. “We’re a close group, so this wasn’t an easy decision. I’ve obviously coached with them all in various ways for a long period of time and we think the team are making shifts in the right direction.” He remains committed to helping the All Blacks secure victories in their upcoming matches, emphasizing his focus on the team’s success.
Support from Coaching Staff
Robertson expressed his respect for Holland, stating, “There’s a massive amount of respect for Jase in our group. Whilst we’re disappointed, he has our support and we respect the decision he’s come to.” He highlighted Holland’s dedication and contributions to the team, calling him not only a great man but also a fantastic coach.
Robertson also mentioned Holland’s commitment to the remaining matches, noting, “Jase has made it clear to the team that he’s completely focused on our four remaining Test matches, and I know he’s already got a few new strike plays up his sleeve.” The All Blacks are eyeing a Grand Slam opportunity, a rare achievement that adds pressure and excitement to the matches ahead.
Holland’s resignation marks the second departure from Robertson’s original coaching selection, following the exit of Leon MacDonald after three tests last year. As the All Blacks prepare for the next chapter in their season, the team remains united in its goal to perform at the highest level.
