The North Otago town of Duntroon is celebrating its 150th anniversary this weekend with a series of activities highlighting the community’s history and culture. Organised by the Duntroon and District Development Association, the festivities promise a packed schedule for residents and visitors alike.

Chairman Owen King noted that preparations have been intense, with the organising team busy finalising details. While they opted not to require registration, King mentioned that they anticipate a turnout ranging from 150 to 250 attendees. “That’s what we’ve sort of catered for, but we’ve got things in place if we do get blown out with huge amounts,” he said.

Festivities Kick Off with Markets and Tours

The celebration will commence with an arts and crafts market at 10:00 AM on March 16, 2024, at the Duntroon Hall, which will also feature a display of historical photographs and media showcasing the town’s rich heritage. The inaugural heritage trail tour will take place on the same day, guiding attendees through six significant historical sites around Duntroon, complete with a horse-drawn carriage to enhance the experience.

On March 17, the events will continue with an 11:30 AM service at St Martin’s Church. This will be followed by the ceremonial planting of a totara tree to commemorate the milestone. The weekend will conclude with a luncheon and cake cutting at the Duntroon Hall, bringing together the community to celebrate this significant occasion.

Local Attractions Open for the Weekend

In addition to the main events, local attractions such as the Vanished World Centre, Nicol’s Blacksmith shop, and the Duntroon Hotel will be open to the public over the two days, providing additional opportunities for visitors to engage with Duntroon’s history and culture.

As the community gears up for this momentous celebration, the weekend promises to be a reflection of Duntroon’s enduring spirit and a chance for residents and guests to come together in a shared celebration of their heritage.
