Tokomanawa Queens Claim Victory Over Southern Hoiho in Thrilling Match

The Tokomanawa Queens secured an impressive 88-76 victory against the Southern Hoiho in Porirua on March 30, 2024. The match showcased standout performances, particularly from the Queens’ Penina Davidson, who achieved a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, alongside contributing two assists, one steal, and two blocks. Not to be outdone, Kristy Wallace led all scorers with 20 points and added nine assists to her tally.

Bec Pizzey emerged as a key player for the Hoiho, finishing the game with 18 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, three steals, and two blocks. Her all-around performance kept the Hoiho competitive throughout the match, particularly in the second half.

The game began with a clean start for both teams until the Hoiho struggled with turnovers. Claire Jacobs managed to close the gap with a deep three-pointer, and Pizzey followed up with a mid-range shot to reduce the deficit to 22-19. However, Stella Beck’s fast break extended the Queens’ lead to 28-20 by the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Lil Dart helped the Hoiho regain momentum, hitting a three-pointer and assisting Pizzey for an easy basket. The Queens continued to exploit mismatches, leading to a halftime score of 54-40.

The Hoiho opened the third quarter with six consecutive points, narrowing the lead to 54-49. Paige Bradley, who contributed 17 points, made a crucial three-pointer to keep the visitors in the hunt. The Queens responded swiftly, with Davidson halting the Hoiho’s momentum and Wallace hitting another three-pointer to restore their lead.

Despite the Hoiho winning the third quarter 20-10, they entered the final quarter trailing 64-60. The Queens countered with a strong start, pushing their advantage to 69-60 and maintaining control through to the final whistle.

This match was a part of the Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa League, highlighting the competitive spirit and skill level of both teams. As the season progresses, the Tokomanawa Queens will look to build on this momentum, while the Southern Hoiho will aim to bounce back in their upcoming games.
