Tokomanawa Queens Triumph Over Southern Hoiho in Thrilling Match
The Tokomanawa Queens secured a solid victory against the Southern Hoiho, winning 88-76 in a highly competitive match held in Porirua on March 15, 2024. The Queens showcased their strength throughout the game, highlighted by impressive performances from key players.
Penina Davidson was a standout for the Queens, finishing with 18 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, one steal, and two blocks. Her contribution was pivotal in maintaining the team’s momentum. Kristy Wallace also made significant contributions, scoring 20 points and providing nine assists.
The Hoiho, despite their loss, had notable performances as well. Bec Pizzey was instrumental, registering 18 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, three steals, and two blocks. Paige Bradley added 17 points to the Hoiho’s efforts, particularly in the second half.
As the game began, the Hoiho started strong but struggled with turnovers. Early on, after a clean start, they found themselves trailing. A deep three-pointer from Claire Jacobs helped the Hoiho narrow the gap to 22-19, but Stella Beck quickly extended the Queens’ lead with a fast break, ending the first quarter at 28-20.
The second quarter saw the Hoiho attempting to close the gap, with Lil Dart making a significant impact by draining a three-pointer and assisting Pizzey under the basket. Despite these efforts, the Queens effectively exploited mismatches and executed fast breaks, leading 54-40 at halftime.
The Hoiho opened the scoring in the third quarter with six consecutive points, prompting a spirited comeback. Bradley’s clutch three-pointer further narrowed the deficit to 54-49. However, Davidson halted a nine-point run by the Hoiho, and Wallace’s deep shot allowed the Queens to regain a significant lead.
The Hoiho continued their fight, winning the third quarter 20-10, and trailing closely at 64-60. Yet, the fourth quarter saw the Queens respond with a surge, establishing a 69-60 lead and maintaining control of the game until the final whistle.
The final score reflected the competitive spirit of both teams: Tokomanawa Queens 88, Southern Hoiho 76. The match was an essential part of the Tauihi Basketball League, demonstrating the thrilling dynamics of women’s basketball in New Zealand.
