Dunedin Showcases Energy Solutions Amid Industry Changes

Dunedin businesses are set to participate in a significant event aimed at helping the community tackle rising energy costs and address climate change. The event, titled Electrify Dunedin, will take place on March 16, 2024, at the Toitu Otago Settlers Museum. This free one-day showcase will feature practical advice and solutions for both local businesses and households looking to reduce their energy bills.

As the electrical industry undergoes substantial changes, the showcase is part of the nationwide Rewiring Aotearoa tour, organized by a volunteer-run community group. According to the event’s organizer, Louis Brown, energy prices are expected to remain elevated over the next two to three years. This event aims to equip attendees with various products, services, and information to help them lower their expenses.

Mr. Brown emphasized the current transformation in the electricity sector, stating, “For decades it’s been meat and potatoes, same old, same old — but it’s having a real shakeup at the moment.” He pointed out that adopting electric technology could yield significant savings for both homeowners and businesses.

Workshops and Local Solutions

The event will feature two workshops tailored for businesses and households. Participants will learn about immediate solutions available in Dunedin. Mr. Brown mentioned that the showcase would highlight four local businesses and their successful strategies for reducing costs. These strategies include transitioning from grid power to solar energy and replacing internal combustion engines with electric fleets.

Some lesser-known solutions will also be presented, such as the use of artificial intelligence to optimize electricity consumption. Mr. Brown expressed hope that the event would inspire attendees by providing local case studies, as well as the tools necessary to implement similar changes in their operations.

Reducing emissions is a crucial benefit of these cost-saving measures, contributing to broader environmental goals. A total of ten local stallholders, including Dunedin Solar, Radcliffe Electrical, Limitless Electrical and Energy Solutions, Proflow Plumbing and Gas, and Aotea Electric, will be on hand to share their expertise and solutions.
