Health Ministry Holds Off on Early Measles Vaccination for Babies
The Ministry of Health has decided against routinely immunising babies under 12 months for measles, despite a recent outbreak resulting in 13 infections and about 2,000 close contacts. This decision has raised concerns among parents who fear the financial burden of early vaccination, which can exceed $200.
According to the Ministry’s Director of Public Health, Dr. Corina Grey, the current outbreak does not warrant early vaccinations. She stated, “We will continue to track the outbreak and review the evidence, but we encourage everybody who is eligible to get vaccinated.” The Ministry is closely monitoring the situation and will adjust its recommendations based on evolving data.
Despite the outbreak, health officials believe that the existing vaccination protocols are sufficient for now. The decision to vaccinate infants earlier than the standard schedule will remain under review as the situation develops.
Parents are advised to stay informed about the outbreak and vaccination options. The Ministry emphasizes the importance of vaccinations for older children and adults, who are at higher risk during an outbreak.
Health officials are keen to ensure the safety of the community while balancing the need for timely interventions. As the number of measles cases and contacts continues to be monitored, the Ministry of Health remains committed to public safety and health.
