Laura Bradley Makes History at Wairarapa Spring Shears
Laura Bradley, a shearing enthusiast from Southern Hawke’s Bay, made history by reaching the open shearing final at the Wairarapa Spring Shears. This achievement marks a significant milestone, as she is believed to be the first woman to advance to an open shearing final in the North Island. Furthermore, she joins an exclusive group of fewer than ten women globally who have achieved this feat.
In her debut performance in an open competition, Bradley finished fourth in the 15-sheep final, showcasing her remarkable skill and determination. Not only did she excel in the shearing category, but she also clinched her first senior woolhandling title in her initial attempt. The only other woman to have reached an open shearing final in New Zealand over the past 15 years is Sarah Hewson from Havelock, who finished fourth at the Nelson A and P Show in 2022.
A Journey of Distinction
Bradley’s journey through the shearing ranks has been nothing short of extraordinary. Over the last season, she secured victory in twelve senior finals, establishing herself as a formidable competitor. Notably, she became the first woman to win the New Zealand Shears senior title in Te Kuiti and achieved the distinction of being the top-ranked senior shearer in New Zealand for the season.
This recent triumph at the Wairarapa event not only highlights her individual talent but also represents a broader shift within the shearing community, showcasing the increasing participation and recognition of women in this traditionally male-dominated sport. Bradley’s achievements serve as an inspiration to aspiring shearers, demonstrating that dedication and hard work can lead to remarkable accomplishments.
The Wairarapa Spring Shears, which attracts competitors from across the region, continues to be a pivotal event in the shearing calendar. It not only provides a platform for seasoned shearers but also encourages newcomers to partake in the sport. Bradley’s success at this event is a testament to the evolving landscape of competitive shearing.
As she looks ahead to future competitions, Laura Bradley’s achievements are set to resonate within the shearing community and beyond. Her story is one of perseverance, breaking barriers, and redefining the possibilities for women in shearing.
