James Denyer Begins Second Term as Western Bay of Plenty Mayor
James Denyer has officially commenced his second term as the Mayor of Western Bay of Plenty, following a swearing-in ceremony at the council’s inaugural meeting on March 7, 2024. Denyer emerged victorious in the recent mayoral election, securing 4,424 votes, significantly outpacing his nearest rival, Margaret Murray-Benge, who received 2,737 votes, and Rodney Joyce, with 1,890 votes.
The ceremony began with a traditional pōwhiri, a Māori welcome ceremony, where interim chief executive Miriam Taris opened the meeting. Newly elected council members took their seats for the first time, marking the start of their three-year term. After taking his oath, Denyer was joined by his partner, Sarah-Jane Bourne, in a moment that highlighted the personal significance of the occasion.
Denyer’s victory marks a continuation of his leadership in the region, where he previously focused on community development and infrastructure improvements. His re-election reflects a strong mandate from voters, indicative of their support for his vision and policies.
In his initial remarks following the swearing-in, Denyer expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him by the electorate. He acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the council and emphasized the importance of engaging with the community to address ongoing challenges.
The council’s new term is set against a backdrop of significant local issues, including housing, economic development, and environmental sustainability. Denyer’s administration will be tasked with navigating these challenges while fostering inclusivity and growth within the region.
As the council starts its work, residents will be keenly observing the initiatives and policies that Denyer and his team will implement over the coming years. The outcome of this leadership period will be pivotal for the future of Western Bay of Plenty, as the council aims to enhance the quality of life for its residents and ensure sustainable development for the region.
