Rotorua Lakes Community Board Announces Bylaw Election Dates
The Rotorua Lakes Community Board has confirmed dates for a byelection to fill two vacant seats, marking the first opportunity for voters to cast ballots in six years. This decision follows a local body election that concluded last month, where only three candidates emerged for the four available seats. The situation became more pressing after the passing of board chairman Phill Thomass in September, who was in the running for re-election.
In the recent elections, Peter MacMillan and Jennifer Rothwell, both existing board members, were re-elected without contest. The low turnout of candidates reflects a trend of unchallenged positions that has persisted in recent years, prompting calls for renewed engagement from the community.
The byelection process is crucial for revitalizing participation in local governance. It is hoped that the community will respond positively, bringing forth new candidates and ideas to the table. The board’s current members are eager to see an increase in electoral involvement, which they believe is essential for addressing local issues effectively.
The byelection is set to take place in the coming months, with specific dates to be announced shortly. Community leaders emphasize the importance of active civic participation, encouraging residents to consider running for office or supporting candidates who represent their interests.
As Rotorua Lakes looks to fill these vacant positions, the hope is that fresh faces will inspire a renewed commitment to the community’s needs and aspirations. Engaging more residents in local governance could lead to a more dynamic and responsive community board, ultimately benefiting the region as a whole.
