The annual Kapa Haka Picnic in the Park took place at Anderson Park in Cromwell, bringing together over 1,000 community members on November 4, 2023. Organized by Te Kāhui Ako te Awanui, the event featured performances of waiata and haka by tamariki from Cromwell’s seven preschools, two primary schools, and local college. The growing popularity of this celebration prompted the organisers to host it outdoors for the first time, a decision that received overwhelming support from the community.

Families and friends gathered, spreading picnic rugs on the grass to enjoy an afternoon filled with cultural performances. A community grant from Contact Energy, along with contributions from the Lions Club and Main Freight, provided BBQ equipment and facilitated a complimentary sausage sizzle, enhancing the festive atmosphere.

Teams of teachers, school support staff, and parent volunteers worked diligently to ensure the event ran smoothly. The weather was also cooperative, allowing the vibrant performances by tamariki and rangatahi to shine.

Cromwell College Principal Mason Stretch, who served as the MC for the day, emphasized the significance of Kapa Haka in fostering community connections. He expressed gratitude towards the kaiako and kapa haka rangatira for their dedication to nurturing a passion for this cultural art form among the children. He also praised the tamariki and rangatahi for sharing their talents and enthusiasm with the wider community.

The event not only celebrated Kapa Haka as a cultural tradition but also reinforced the sense of unity within Cromwell. As the community continues to embrace this celebration, the annual Picnic in the Park is set to remain a cherished event in the local calendar, showcasing the vibrant cultural heritage and collective spirit of the region.
