A local runner, known as Brownie, is taking on the extraordinary challenge of running a marathon each day in November to support the fundraising efforts of Movember. This initiative focuses on raising awareness for men’s health issues. Balancing a demanding work schedule, he aims to complete a total of 30 marathons, coinciding with the 30 days of the month.

Inspired by fellow members of the Industrial Fitness gym, Brownie decided to participate in the annual fundraising challenge. “I thought I’d try and get involved… I’m turning 30, so I thought, ‘what better way to bring in your 30s than 30 marathons?’” he shared. The timing of the challenge aligns perfectly with his birthday, which was on November 1, 2023.

Daily Routines and Preparation

An accomplished ultramarathon and Hyrox competitor, Brownie acknowledges that this challenge will test him both mentally and physically. “You’ve got to prepare yourself for four or five hours a day of running, as well as the logistics of it,” he explained. He estimates that by the end of the month, he will have run over 1,260 kilometers in total, amounting to approximately 784 miles.

So far, he has been completing the daily 42.2 kilometers in the mornings before heading to work. Brownie manages a family-owned mattress business in Queenstown, which has been in operation for 86 years. His role allows for some flexibility in his hours, enabling him to fit in his runs.

The weather has been favorable since he began the challenge, but he plans to use a treadmill at the gym if conditions become too adverse. “I’m keeping it nice and slow, so the body doesn’t blow up too early,” he stated. So far, he has avoided any blisters, noting that while his joints feel stiff in the mornings, they loosen up once he starts running.

Lifestyle and Community Engagement

Brownie relocated to Queenstown about 18 months ago and has embraced the active lifestyle that the area offers. He enjoys running on the local hill trails with his dog and has participated in various events, including the Arrowtown Backyard Ultra, Shotover Moonlight Mountain Marathon, and Northburn 100.

Next week, he will run in the Queenstown Marathon, which will serve as the halfway point in his Movember mission. With donations rapidly approaching his initial target of $5,000, Brownie is considering increasing his goal to $10,000 to further support men’s health initiatives.

The dedication of individuals like Brownie highlights the power of community engagement in raising awareness for important health issues. His commitment not only showcases personal endurance but also inspires others to contribute to the cause. As he continues his marathon journey, the impact of his efforts will resonate far beyond the finish line.
