Hoiho Triumph Over Kāhu, Keeping Them Winless This Season
The Southern Hoiho secured a convincing victory over the Northern Kāhu, winning 73-59 in Auckland on March 15, 2024. This match marked the second time that twins Claire and Amy Jacobs faced each other on opposing teams, with Claire maintaining her perfect record against her sister. The Hoiho’s triumph ensures the Kāhu remain winless this season.
After trailing at halftime, the Hoiho demonstrated resilience, dominating the second half with a strong defensive performance. Bec Pizzey, returning from an ankle injury, played a pivotal role, contributing 20 points, nine rebounds, and four assists. Paige Bradley also made her mark with 11 points and nine assists, showcasing her defensive skills with five steals.
The Kāhu started the game with energy, jumping to a 14-6 lead. However, the Hoiho quickly responded, with Lil Dart scoring a crucial three-pointer to narrow the gap. By the end of the first quarter, the Hoiho trailed by just two points, 16-14.
As the game progressed, the physicality increased. Tahlia Tupaea helped the Kāhu extend their lead to six points with a successful three-pointer, finishing the first half at 31-23 in favor of the Kāhu.
The second half saw a shift in momentum. Haliegh Reinoehl opened with a three-pointer, giving the Kāhu an 11-point lead. However, the Hoiho tightened their defense and began to close the gap. A deep three from Dart provided the Hoiho with their first lead of the game at 38-36, and they never looked back.
The Hoiho outscored the Kāhu 25-15 in the third quarter, finishing with a 48-43 lead heading into the final period. Claire Jacobs hit a three-pointer to extend the Hoiho’s advantage to 11 points. Although the Kāhu mounted a comeback, Bradley’s timely shots kept the Hoiho in control.
Dart emerged as a key player off the bench, scoring 19 points, including two late three-pointers that sealed the victory for the Hoiho. The final score reflected the Hoiho’s strong finish, concluding the game at 73-59.
The Kāhu’s recent roster changes, including parting ways with Americans Jasmyne Roberts and Aliyah Matharu and releasing Kiwi Krystal Leger-Walker, have posed challenges. However, new additions Erin Bollmann and Amy Jacobs showed promise, highlighting a potential turning point for the team.
Overall, the Hoiho’s victory not only keeps their season aspirations alive but also underscores the competitive spirit in the league. As the season progresses, the Kāhu will need to regroup and find their winning form to avoid a challenging campaign ahead.
