Cyclist Dies in Wairarapa Charity Ride Collision

A tragic accident during the annual Martinborough Charity Fun Ride on Saturday resulted in the death of a cyclist. The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 am on Kokotau Rd in Parkvale, near Carterton, when two riders collided. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, and one individual was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to injuries, according to the local police.

The charity ride, which began in 1995, sees participants cycle a loop from Martinborough to Masterton and back. While emergency responders worked to secure the area, Kokotau Rd was temporarily closed. The police confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the crash, emphasizing the focus on the two cyclists.

As news of the incident spread, heartfelt condolences poured in from the cycling community. Social media posts reflected the shock and sadness shared by participants and organizers alike. One commenter expressed, “Very sad times when we lose a fellow rider, thinking of their loved ones.” Another user noted the unexpected nature of the event, stating, “Omg so shocked, I rode the fun ride yesterday, these are my local roads. The USO Bike Ride, part of a Pacific cycling network, also extended their sympathies via social media. They wrote, “We send our prayers, alofa and condolences to the family of the rider who passed away following an accident between two riders at the Wairarapa Charity Funride yesterday. We keep the surviving rider and his family in our prayers too – a sad day for the cycling community.”

Organized by the Rotary Club of South Wairarapa, the event aims to raise funds for The CatWalk Trust, which supports research into spinal cord injuries. This year’s ride not only fostered community spirit but also highlighted the importance of safety in cycling events.
