Wellington Phoenix Midfielder Macey Fraser Takes Mental Health Break
Wellington Phoenix midfielder Macey Fraser has been granted a leave of absence to prioritize her mental health. The decision follows her recent rejoining of the Phoenix on a three-year contract in September 2023, yet she has not played for the team since returning from the Utah Royals in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).
Support From Club Leadership
Director of football Shaun Gill expressed the club’s commitment to Fraser’s well-being, stating that the organization will continue to support her during this time away from football. “In conjunction with our performance psychologists and club doctor, it’s been agreed Macey needs a break from the pressures of high-performance sport,” Gill said.
Gill emphasized the importance of mental health in athletics, noting, “Football, like a lot of sports, can be all-consuming, and she is much more than just a footballer. We want Macey to have a long and successful football career, but that shouldn’t come at the expense of her mental health.” He added that all involved believe a break will benefit Fraser significantly, and they look forward to welcoming her back when she is ready.
Fraser’s Career Journey
Fraser’s career has seen significant milestones, including a record transfer fee for the A-League Women when she left the Phoenix in 2024 to join the Utah Royals on a three-year contract. Her return to Wellington this season was met with anticipation, but her current focus is on her mental health and well-being.
The club’s proactive approach highlights an increasing awareness of mental health issues in professional sports. Fraser’s situation raises important discussions about athlete welfare, demonstrating that taking time off for mental health is a crucial step in maintaining overall performance and longevity in the sport.
As the Phoenix and their supporters await her return, Fraser’s situation serves as a reminder that mental health should always be prioritized, especially in high-pressure environments. The club’s commitment to her well-being reflects a broader trend in sports to create supportive environments for athletes facing similar challenges.
