Baby Receives Chemotherapy After Brain Tumor Diagnosis
A 16-week-old baby named Declan has begun chemotherapy following the discovery of a 4 cm brain tumor. His mother, Emma McComb, took him to Palmerston North Hospital on October 30, 2023, after a friend pointed out that Declan’s fontanelle, or soft spot on his head, appeared larger than normal. Concerns grew when medical staff noted that his head had increased in size by 3 cm in just a few days.
The diagnosis has been particularly challenging for Declan’s family, who must travel frequently between Starship Hospital in Auckland and their home in Palmerston North for treatment. To assist with the financial burdens associated with this ordeal, Declan’s godmother established a fundraising page on Give a Little, aiming to support his parents during this difficult time.
Emma McComb shared her experience, emphasizing the emotional toll of watching her infant son face such a serious health challenge. “Seeing him go through this is heartbreaking,” she remarked, expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community and friends. The funds raised will help cover travel expenses, medical bills, and any additional costs that arise as Declan continues his treatment.
The medical team has indicated that the chemotherapy is a necessary step to combat the tumor, and they are closely monitoring Declan’s condition. As the family navigates this difficult path, they remain hopeful for positive outcomes from the treatment.
Community members have rallied around Declan and his family, demonstrating solidarity in their challenging journey. The support has provided some comfort to Emma and her family, reminding them that they are not alone in this fight.
As Declan continues his treatment, updates will be shared on the Give a Little page, allowing those who contribute to stay informed about his progress. The community’s involvement underscores the importance of support networks during times of crisis, particularly for families facing medical emergencies.
