Auckland FC Aims for Record Goals as May Seeks Scoring Momentum
Auckland FC is setting its sights on a more prolific scoring season in the A-League, with forward Guillermo May expressing confidence despite his own slow start. As the team heads into the fifth round of the 2023 season, May has yet to score, but he remains optimistic about Auckland’s offensive potential, having been the leading scorer during the club’s inaugural campaign last year.
Last season, May scored the first of his nine goals in the fifth round. He averaged a goal every couple of games, but this year has faced challenges, including three starts and one appearance off the bench without finding the net. Although he admits to feeling some “anxiety” about his lack of goals, he prioritizes the team’s success over personal statistics. “If the team wins and I don’t score, I prefer to be on a winning team than be the scoring man,” he stated.
Auckland FC achieved an impressive milestone last season, netting 50 goals and becoming the fastest team in the league’s history to reach that figure. May believes the current squad, bolstered by new signings like Sam Cosgrove and Lachlan Brook, will surpass that total this year. “We are playing with the ball better than last season, and that is helping us create better chances. I think we’re going to score more goals this year,” he said.
As he trains and plays, May observes a heightened level of competition across the A-League. With more teams vying for playoff positions, he recognizes the importance of maintaining focus. “The four teams we’ve faced are going to be competitive,” he noted. “I’m confident in our team, our training, and how we are performing.”
May is also managing his recovery from injury, navigating the ups and downs of regaining his fitness. “I’m getting back to the pace, the rhythm, the fitness,” he explained. He sets high standards for himself, emphasizing the need to contribute not just as a scorer but also in facilitating plays. “In my role, it’s more about getting the connections between lines, trying to assist to score and create good chances. I push every day to be better,” he added.
He will have another opportunity to score when Auckland FC hosts Brisbane Roar on March 15, 2024. As the season progresses, May’s determination to improve both his personal performance and the team’s success remains clear.
