Fiji Triumphs Over Spain 41-33 in Thrilling Rugby Showdown
The Fiji national rugby team secured a hard-fought victory against Spain, winning 41-33 in a closely contested match on March 10, 2024, at the Estadio de Atletismo Ciudad de Málaga. This match marked the conclusion of Fiji’s three-match tour in Europe, where they previously faced defeats against England and France. The Flying Fijians needed this victory to end their tour on a high note, and they delivered despite a strong performance from the home side.
Fiji’s captain, Tevita Ikanivere, acknowledged the challenges posed by Spain, describing the match as “very tough.” He expressed mixed feelings about the team’s performance, stating, “Spain were very good tonight. We could have done better but proud of the boys out there.” The Fijians faced significant pressure from their opponents, particularly with Spain’s effective mauling tactics, which Ikanivere noted as a key aspect of their game.
Spain opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a try from halfback Estanislao Bay, followed by a successful conversion that put them ahead 7-0. Fiji quickly responded with a well-executed cross-kick from fly-half Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula, finding winger Elia Cakananivata for a try that leveled the match. However, Spain maintained a narrow lead at halftime, 15-14, after adding a penalty and another try.
The second half saw Fiji take the lead for the first time through a try from halfback Simione Kuruvoli, bringing the score to 21-15. Yet, Spain fought back, with Bay scoring his second try, allowing Spain to regain the lead. The back-and-forth contest continued, with Spain establishing a 33-24 advantage in the 63rd minute through a combination of penalties and tries.
Fiji’s resilience shone through when replacement forward Atunaisa Sokowale powered over for a try, narrowing Spain’s lead to 33-31 with eight minutes remaining. In a dramatic turn, Armstrong-Ravula executed another precise cross-kick, enabling winger Joji Nasova to score and put Fiji back in the lead at 38-33. Armstrong-Ravula capped off the victory with a final penalty, securing the 41-33 win for the Flying Fijians.
This match not only highlighted Fiji’s determination but also showcased Spain’s growing prowess in international rugby. The close score reflects the competitive nature of the game and sets the stage for both teams as they look ahead to future challenges.
