Donald Glover, known professionally as Childish Gambino, has revealed that a serious health issue led to the cancellation of his Auckland concert and the premature end of his final tour. Doctors diagnosed the 42-year-old artist with a heart defect, specifically a hole in his heart, following a stroke he experienced while on tour.

Initially set for January 28, 2024, Glover’s concert at Spark Arena was part of his highly anticipated New World Tour, which was expected to be his last under the Childish Gambino name. After performing 18 shows, the remaining dates in North America and Europe were unexpectedly cancelled as Glover opted for surgery to address his health concerns. He had previously announced the cancellation of the Australian and New Zealand leg of the tour in November 2023, citing a longer-than-anticipated recovery process.

In a heartfelt message to fans, Glover expressed, “One of the last things I’d ever want to do is disappoint my fans. I really appreciate the support you have shown and know that I will do what I can to give you an exceptional experience when the time is right. Thank you.”

During his first public appearance after the cancellations, Glover shared more details about his health scare at Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival. He recounted experiencing severe headaches while performing in Louisiana, which led him to seek medical attention in Houston. There, doctors informed him that he had suffered a stroke. “The first thing I thought was like, ‘I’m letting everybody down,’” Glover said during his performance.

Following this alarming diagnosis, Glover learned about the heart defect that necessitated surgical intervention. He described the series of events leading to his health issues, stating, “I broke my foot … They found a hole in my heart … so I had this surgery, and then I had to have another surgery.” He emphasized the importance of life and the lessons learned through these experiences, noting, “They say everybody has two lives and the second life starts when you realise you have one.”

As of now, Glover has not disclosed whether his treatment has resolved his health issues or if he plans to return to touring. The five-time Grammy winner began his career as Childish Gambino in 2008, releasing five albums and establishing a significant presence in the music industry. In a previous interview with the New York Times, he indicated that he was ready to move on from this persona, saying, “It’s not fulfilling. And I just felt like I didn’t need to build in this way anymore.”

As fans await updates on Glover’s recovery and future plans, the artist’s health concerns serve as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by performers in balancing their careers with personal well-being.
