Simon Dallow Bids Farewell After 20 Years as 1News Anchor
Simon Dallow concluded his nearly two-decade tenure as a news presenter for 1News at Six, marking the end of an era in New Zealand broadcasting. During his emotional farewell, Dallow expressed gratitude to viewers and colleagues alike, stating it had been a “genuine privilege” to deliver the news to audiences.
In his final moments on air, Dallow directly addressed viewers, emphasizing the importance of his role. “I’ve always firmly believed newsreaders should never be the news, but now I’m no longer one and that means I can say, it’s been a genuine privilege to be on your screens and in your living rooms,” he remarked. His voice quivered with emotion as he reflected on his career, pausing to collect himself several times.
Dallow continued, “All I’ve ever wanted was to help you better understand the complexities of today’s news without influencing or distracting you. I hope I’ve succeeded in that more than I’ve failed.” He concluded his address with warm wishes for the holiday season, saying, “To you and your loved ones, I wish you a Merry Christmas and sunny summer ahead. Good night and good luck.”
Career Highlights and Transition
Dallow’s farewell came after an announcement earlier in December 2023 that he would step down from the role. His departure opens the door for Melissa Stokes, who will transition from her weekend presenting role to anchor the weekday bulletin. Stokes has been a part of TVNZ for over two decades and has served as the Europe Correspondent, showcasing her extensive experience in journalism.
Throughout his career, Dallow has been a familiar face on New Zealand television, joining TVNZ as a presenter in 1993. He made appearances on various programs, including Newsnight, Agenda, and Q + A, before taking over as the lead presenter for 1News at Six alongside former co-host Wendy Petrie.
His colleagues also paid tribute during the broadcast. Weather presenter Renee Wright remarked, “It has been an honour working with you,” highlighting the camaraderie that has developed over the years. As a tribute to his impactful career, a video montage showcasing Dallow’s best moments was aired, allowing viewers to reminisce about his contributions to journalism.
Dallow’s commitment to delivering the news with integrity and clarity has shaped his legacy in New Zealand media. His departure signifies not only the end of his personal journey but also a moment for reflection on the evolving landscape of news broadcasting in the country.
As TVNZ prepares for this transition, many will remember Simon Dallow for his dedication and professionalism, qualities that have earned him respect and admiration from viewers and colleagues alike.
