Kiwi-Indian Duo Quits Jobs to Embrace Van Life Adventure
Young New Zealanders Ami and Sagar have embarked on a transformative journey, living full-time in their white travel van, Wander Bee. The couple, originally from Surat, Gujarat, made the bold decision to quit their stable jobs in September 2023 to explore the stunning landscapes of New Zealand and beyond. This lifestyle change reflects their desire for growth and new experiences, encapsulated in their version of an “adult gap year.”
Ami, passionate about travel, was inspired by the concept popular in Western countries. “I was hooked on the idea of travelling full time,” she shared. Since beginning their adventure, the couple has redefined what “home” means. Their journey is supported by a disciplined budget of $160 a day, allowing them to embrace freedom camping while discovering Aotearoa’s breathtaking views.
Convincing their families of this unconventional choice took time and effort. “There is a whole new world opening up,” the duo explained, emphasizing the importance of communication and sharing examples of successful Indian creators to garner support. After over a decade in New Zealand and achieving citizenship, Ami and Sagar felt ready to follow their passion for travel.
As they prepared for their journey, they carefully planned and saved, ultimately resigning from their six-figure jobs. “Our initial plan was just one year of the adult gap year, but we saved a bit more and quit our jobs,” Ami told The Indian Weekender. Their travels began in 2024 across Asia and extended through Eastern and Central Europe, before they returned in August 2025 to reconnect with friends and family in New Zealand.
The notion of returning home brought forth the idea of exploring their adopted country through the van. “New Zealand is our home; we know the ins and outs. So we decided to explore the country in September after quitting our full-time jobs,” Sagar explained. However, the couple soon discovered that transitioning to a life as digital nomads was more challenging than anticipated. “That shift was very hard,” Ami admitted, highlighting the logistical complexities involved in their new lifestyle.
Creating Unique Content and Building a Brand
Ami and Sagar’s approach to documenting their journey is distinct. They aim to provide a rich, textured narrative that goes beyond typical travel itineraries. “We are also trying to find clients who’d like our help with their brands and page,” they said. Meeting fellow van travelers introduced them to the concept of being digital nomads, where content creation can become a full-time job.
Initially starting with a YouTube channel focused on long-form travel videos, their strategy evolved as they realized Instagram offered faster growth opportunities. Their account, @sagarandami, grew from 2,000 followers in June 2025 to over 30,000 as of now. Ami manages logistics and business communications, while Sagar focuses on creative content and marketing strategies. Their joint efforts have transformed their Instagram presence into a full-time operation.
“On work days, we hunt for a Department of Conservation (DOC) campsite, set up our laptops, finish tasks, and end the day with a simple meal and a podcast or series,” Ami explained. They have collaborated with organizations such as the New Zealand Tourism Board and Kiwi Rail, helping brands enhance their visibility through social media.
Essentials for Life on the Road
The couple emphasizes three essential rules for anyone considering this lifestyle. “First, be flexible. You might have to end up somewhere you have no idea about,” they advise. “Second, be respectful of all the rules and laws. Freedom camping is the best way to travel around New Zealand, but it comes with responsibilities. So no littering.” Finally, they recommend downloading apps that simplify the experience, providing essential information on campsites and resources.
Currently enjoying the serene beauty of the Mackenzie region on New Zealand’s South Island, Ami and Sagar appreciate the fewer crowds and stunning scenery. Looking ahead, the couple plans to continue their travels across the South Island until March 2026. “If we save $20,000 and hit 50,000 followers by the end of this year, then we can plan our journey ahead,” they shared.
Their evolving story resides at the intersection of discipline and ambition, proving that starting over in your 30s can lead to incredible adventures and personal growth. For Ami and Sagar, life in Wander Bee is just the beginning of a journey filled with exploration and connection.
