James Vanderbilt Chronicles 13-Year Journey on Nuremberg Film
Director and writer James Vanderbilt has dedicated over a decade to bringing the complex story of the Nuremberg trials to the big screen. His film, aptly titled Nuremberg, explores the intricate relationship between Captain Douglas M. Kelley, an American army psychiatrist, and Hermann Göring, one of the most notorious figures of the Nazi regime. This project, which has consumed Vanderbilt’s creative energies for the past thirteen years, draws inspiration from a six-page proposal by journalist and author Jack El-Hai.
Reflecting on his extensive research, Vanderbilt humorously recalls a moment when his wife requested he limit the number of books on Nazis by their bedside. He describes being “deep down the rabbit hole,” captivated by the historical intricacies and moral dilemmas surrounding the war trials that followed World War II.
Unlikely Bonds Amidst Historical Atrocities
The film focuses on the interactions between Kelley and Göring at Nuremberg Prison in 1945, where Kelley was tasked with assessing Göring’s mental fitness to stand trial after his surrender to Allied forces. During their sessions, an unlikely bond developed as the two men engaged in intense psychological exchanges. Kelley, known for his ambition and expertise, found himself intellectually challenged by Göring, whose charisma and cunning were legendary.
Vanderbilt describes the profound impact of El-Hai’s proposal, which laid the groundwork for the film. The story not only highlights the trials but also delves into the psychological complexities of the individuals involved. “It left me floored,” Vanderbilt admits, underscoring the emotional weight and historical significance of the narrative he sought to portray.
The Journey to the Screen
Bringing Nuremberg to fruition has not been without challenges. Vanderbilt initially faced hurdles in securing funding and support, a process that took years to navigate. He emphasizes the importance of perseverance and passion in creative endeavors, noting that the project became a labor of love. “The history is so rich, and the stakes were so high,” he explains, reflecting on the weight of responsibility that comes with telling such a significant story.
The film aims to resonate with contemporary audiences while offering a sobering reminder of the past. Vanderbilt believes that exploring these historical events is crucial in understanding the complexities of human behavior and morality. “It’s easy to view history in black and white, but the truth is far more complicated,” he asserts.
As Nuremberg approaches its release, anticipation builds around how Vanderbilt’s portrayal of these historical figures will engage viewers. The film not only sheds light on the trials themselves but also encourages reflection on the broader themes of justice, accountability, and the human capacity for both good and evil.
