Suzuki International Series Kicks Off Exciting Racing Season in Taupō
The highly anticipated Suzuki International Series is set to commence this weekend in Taupō, New Zealand, marking a significant event in the motorcycle racing calendar. Organiser Allan Willacy has confirmed that all preparations are in place for the series, which is entering its 17th year. The competition consists of three rounds, with the second round taking place in Feilding next weekend, and the finale at the renowned Cemetery Circuit in Whanganui on Boxing Day, December 26.
Willacy expressed his enthusiasm for the event, highlighting the impressive number of entries this year. Top-tier riders from across New Zealand, as well as international competitors from countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, are set to participate.
“Competitors will be eager to give their all, whether aiming for victory or to bolster their reputations,” Willacy stated. “We anticipate that spectators will enjoy the fast-paced nature of the event.”
Among the prominent riders participating are the father-and-son duo from Whakatane, Tony and Mitch Rees, along with Alastair Hoogenboezem from Christchurch, Dave Sharp from Auckland, Rogan Chandler from Silverstream, Morgan McLaren-Wood from Cambridge, and several others. Riders like Richie Dibben, Luca Durning, Zak Fuller, Ashton Hughes, and Jonny Lewis from Nelson are also expected to contend for top positions.
Willacy emphasized the series’ inclusive class rules, which allow club-level riders to compete alongside seasoned professionals. This format often serves as a platform for emerging talents in the sport. “The diversity of motorcycle classes offered in this series caters to a wide range of motorcycle owners, contributing to the high participation numbers we witness each year,” he noted. “Our goal is to provide something for everyone.”
As the excitement builds for the Suzuki International Series, the atmosphere in Taupō is electric. With a blend of seasoned veterans and aspiring racers, this year’s event promises to deliver thrilling competition and showcase the best of motorcycle road racing.
