Mouldy School Lunches in Christchurch Linked to Human Error

Mouldy lunches served to students at Haeata Community Campus in Christchurch were likely the result of human error, according to New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). Investigations suggest that staff inadvertently distributed food that had been left out for an extended period.

Vincent Arbuckle, the deputy director-general of New Zealand Food Safety, stated that the available evidence indicates a mistake by staff members involving the distribution of contaminated lunches. This assessment follows a recent incident where mouldy food was served to children, raising concerns among parents and the community.

In a media statement issued on March 14, 2024, Peggy Burrows, the principal of Haeata Community Campus, addressed the situation. She defended the school’s actions, noting that CCTV footage clearly shows a delivery made by a Compass Group driver who dropped off eight cambro food storage boxes on March 7. Burrows denied allegations that an additional box was left on the premises, asserting that had it been the case, it would have been noticed and collected by property staff.

Despite Burrows’ statements, Arbuckle emphasized that the frequency of food deliveries and the number of boxes entering and exiting the school each day do not provide sufficient evidence to confirm that all leftover lunches were accounted for.

The incident has drawn significant attention, with parents expressing concern over food safety standards at the school. The MPI has committed to further investigations to ensure such incidents do not recur.
