Gore Community Faces Rising Demand for Food and Shelter Support

The demand for food, shelter, and support services in Gore is increasing, according to Michelle Chirnside, a navigator with the Salvation Army Gore community ministries. She highlighted that while the need for these services has always existed, it has intensified recently, reflecting a broader national trend. Chirnside emphasized the importance of community support, noting the generosity of local residents and organizations.

Community initiatives have played a crucial role in addressing food insecurity. The Gore River Valley Lions launched their “Toot for Tucker” initiative, which recently collected over 7,000 supermarket items for those in need. Chirnside remarked, “This is what makes Gore unique, that the community steps up and supports.” However, she noted that food insecurity is rising across all demographics, with families often sacrificing food during tough times.

A variety of challenges can quickly push low-income households into a cycle of poverty. Chirnside pointed out that a car breaking down or a child’s birthday can significantly impact their financial stability. She stated, “Food is the first thing people will sacrifice,” indicating the precarious nature of food security in the region.

The situation is compounded by the lack of emergency housing in Gore. The closure of the Gore Motor Camp, scheduled for January 31 due to health and safety concerns, will exacerbate this issue. The lease for the campground was terminated by the Gore District Council. Debbie Lascelles, the council’s chief executive, mentioned that discussions are ongoing regarding the termination. Chirnside cautioned her clients against approaching the campground, as the remaining emergency housing options and mental health services are already “overloaded.”

Despite these challenges, Chirnside has not observed an increase in requests for food support from local schools. Additionally, her clientele were not significantly impacted by the strong winds experienced in October. The primary concern remains the rising cost of living, which is affecting many families in the area.

As the community navigates these pressing issues, the continued support from local organizations and residents will be crucial in providing assistance to those in need. The collaboration among community members highlights the resilience and generosity that define Gore, even in the face of growing challenges.
