The community of Wānaka is mourning the loss of Peter Lyall “PL” Anderson, a prominent figure in local rugby and farming, who passed away last week. He was 83 years old. Known for his unwavering commitment to both rugby and the land, Anderson leaves behind a legacy that will resonate through the generations he impacted.

Born in 1940 in Cromwell, not far from his family’s sheep farm, Anderson was raised in Central Otago. He attended local schools before moving to Timaru Boys’ High School. Returning to his roots, he worked as a shepherd across various stations, eventually managing Criffel Station. It was here that he met his wife, Jan Anderson, in the late 1960s. She recalls their early courtship, saying, “He thought ‘oh well, she’ll do’” after recognizing her charm among the community of teachers.

Their marriage in 1972 marked the beginning of a partnership dedicated to family and community. Jan describes PL as a generous man, whose passion for rugby often left her feeling like a “rugby widow.” His commitment to the sport was evident as he transformed into a dedicated coach and administrator. The nickname “PL” emerged during his coaching days when he began referring to players and friends by their initials, a tradition that stuck throughout their long marriage.

Anderson’s involvement with rugby was profound. He played a pivotal role in merging the Tarras Rugby Club and Wānaka Rugby Club in the early 1970s, becoming the president at the inception of this new chapter. His dedication led the Clutha Rugby Club to become one of the first in New Zealand to allow women into after-match functions in 1972, a significant shift in the club’s culture.

As club president, he was known for his engaging speeches and the respect he earned from members of all ages. Club president Gary Read noted, “PL’s dedication, leadership, and passion for our club helped shape UCRFC into the community and family it is today.” The impact of his leadership will be felt across every generation of players wearing the club’s colours.

His son, Will Anderson, highlighted his father’s resilience despite facing numerous health challenges. “Dad was the most positive and stoic of men,” he said. “He never complained, despite having a number of ailments.” Will also emphasized the relationships his father built across the community, noting that players continued to reach out to him long after their playing days.

In addition to his contributions to rugby, Anderson was passionate about dog trialling. He trained his own heading dogs and served as chairman of the local dog trial club. His expertise even led him to judge at the National Dog Trials, showcasing his deep connection to the land and farming.

The Andersons’ journey in farming began in 1975 when they purchased Jan’s parents’ farm in Milton. Five years later, they moved to Cloudy Peak Station in Tarras, where they raised their two children, Will and Emily, and managed a vast operation of 10,000 sheep on the 10,000-hectare farm. Jan fondly reflects, “He was a stockman through and through.”

Anderson’s legacy is not limited to his achievements in rugby or farming. His community spirit and commitment to family are what truly defined him. In her reflections, Jan recalls the countless letters from former players who maintained contact with their beloved coach, illustrating the lasting impact he had on many lives.

As the Wānaka community comes together to celebrate the life of PL Anderson, it is clear that his influence will remain etched in the hearts of those he touched. His dedication to rugby, farming, and his family will resonate through the generations, ensuring that his spirit lives on in the community he loved.
