The NZ Breakers have surged into contention for the ANBL playoffs with a decisive 99-86 victory over the Tasmania JackJumpers at Spark Arena in Auckland. This win marks the Breakers’ fourth triumph in their last five games, elevating them into the top six of the league standings for the first time this season.

Strong from the outset, the Breakers scored the first nine points of the match, quickly establishing a double-digit lead. By the end of the first quarter, they had expanded their advantage to as much as 17 points. Despite a spirited response from Tasmania, who managed to close the gap to two points at one stage, the Breakers maintained a comfortable lead at halftime, going into the locker room with a score of 52-41.

The game featured notable performances from both teams, with NBA prospect Karim Lopez and Tall Blacks star Sam Mennenga both picking up three personal fouls in the first half, forcing them to start the third quarter on the bench. American players Rob Baker and Izaiah Brockington stood out for the Breakers, contributing 13 and 16 points respectively. The return of Tai Webster, filling in for the injured Izayah Le’afa, provided an additional spark for the home side.

Throughout the season, the Breakers have struggled to maintain large leads. Despite this, they showcased resilience in the second half. Lopez came off the bench to sink a three-pointer on his first touch, while Mennenga electrified the crowd with a powerful dunk that added a three-point play from the free-throw line.

As the fourth quarter unfolded, the JackJumpers remained in striking distance, trailing by just 10 points. A crucial steal by Breakers guard Parker Jackson-Cartwright, who converted it into an easy lay-up, extended the lead to 12 points with five minutes remaining. Although Tasmania reduced the deficit to single digits, Jackson-Cartwright’s critical three-pointer with 1 minute and 40 seconds left on the clock provided the Breakers with the breathing room they needed.

Jackson-Cartwright finished the game with 16 points and 12 assists, while Brockington led all scorers with a game-high 22 points. For the JackJumpers, Bryce Hamilton was the standout performer, contributing 21 points to his team’s efforts.

Looking ahead, the Breakers will travel to face the South East Melbourne Phoenix next Saturday, March 9, 2024, as they aim to solidify their playoff position.
