East Auckland residents will have the opportunity to engage directly with planners regarding the proposed PC120 property intensification initiative. Following community concerns about the project’s lack of clarity and engagement, Auckland Council announced an additional information session to be held on December 9, 2023, at St Columba Presbyterian Church in Botany. This decision reflects the council’s recognition of the community’s desire for transparency in the planning process.

Over the past month, discussions surrounding PC120 have dominated the dialogue in the area, as residents voiced their apprehensions regarding the scale of proposed developments and the absence of a clear timeline. Bo Burns, the local councillor, emphasized that the decision to host a session in the community represents a significant victory for the residents. Previously, all in-person meetings were conducted outside the ward, which many felt did not adequately accommodate the size and needs of the local population.

In addition to the developments related to PC120, Burns has been actively addressing a variety of issues affecting constituents. In just one month, he has received over 150 inquiries on topics ranging from PC120 to concerns about the Pakuranga Highway, water rates, and various council services. Each inquiry is treated with urgency, either handled directly by Burns or forwarded to the appropriate department.

To effectively represent the ward, Burns has participated in numerous briefings and workshops. These sessions have included emergency management planning, legal and finance briefings, and discussions on council policies such as the Uniformed Annual General Charge (UAGC). Notably, rates related to the UAGC have not been discussed since 2016 and have remained unchanged since 2012. Burns has been vocal in ensuring these discussions are brought to the forefront, highlighting the importance of community input.

The councilor has also engaged with various local organizations, including the Cockle Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association, to facilitate discussions on submissions regarding PC120 and to elaborate on the implications of property rates. Through these conversations, he aims to ensure that the interests of East Auckland residents are prioritized in the planning process.

Burns has been active in community events as well, such as attending the Business East Tamaki breakfast with the Prime Minister and the opening of the Barry Curtis Park playground, which celebrated local families. His commitment to serving the community is evident as he balances his council responsibilities with ongoing outreach efforts.

The upcoming information session on PC120 is an opportunity for residents to gain insights directly from planners, view maps related to the project, and better understand how the proposed changes might impact their neighborhoods. The session is scheduled for December 9, 2023, from 18:30 to 20:00.

As Burns continues his work in the council, he invites residents to stay engaged and share their voices. “Your voice matters,” he stated, reaffirming his dedication to ensuring that East Auckland is well represented and heard.
