Young Journalist Interviews Prime Minister Luxon About Pizza Preferences
A seventh-grade student, Jianna Kapoor, recently had the unique opportunity to interview New Zealand’s Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. The interview, which took place at the Prime Minister’s office, included a light-hearted question about his preference for pineapple on pizza.
This remarkable experience began when Jianna expressed her desire to interview the Prime Minister to Chris Harrowell, the editor of the Eastern Times. A few weeks later, she received a response confirming the interview opportunity, although she initially missed the email due to not having a phone.
Upon returning home from school, Jianna’s mother teased her with the news, asking her to guess the surprise. After several incorrect guesses, including hopes for ice cream or prizes, Jianna learned she would be interviewing Prime Minister Luxon. Excitement and nervousness filled her as she processed the news.
Her parents played a crucial role in preparing her for the interview. Jianna struggled with drafting questions, unsure whether to focus on serious topics or introduce some humor. With her father’s assistance, she began to formulate a range of questions addressing issues like education, the economy, and Luxon’s daily responsibilities.
Reflecting on her journey, Jianna noted how this opportunity transformed from a distant dream into reality with her parents’ guidance and support. She expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Luxon for dedicating time to the interview, acknowledging her pride in overcoming her nerves and fears.
Jianna plans to share her experience and insights from the interview in an upcoming article, where she will discuss her emotions during the meeting and the overall conversation. She encourages other young people to pursue their dreams, stating, “If it can happen to me, it can happen to you too.” This inspiring message underscores the importance of seizing opportunities and pushing beyond personal boundaries.
Jianna Kapoor is currently in Year 7 at Somerville Intermediate School in New Zealand, highlighting the potential for youth engagement in politics and media.
