Cherie Heeney Returns to Flaxmere College as New Principal

Cherie Heeney has been appointed as the new principal of Flaxmere College, marking a significant moment in the school’s history. Heeney, who began her educational journey as a Year 7 student on the college’s inaugural day in 1993, will now lead the institution where her own academic roots were planted.
Heeney, formerly known as Pohatu, has served as the deputy principal prior to this announcement made by the school’s board of trustees on Thursday. Her appointment makes her the sixth principal in the college’s history, a role she steps into with a deep understanding of the school’s evolution and community.
Flaxmere College opened its doors as a high school in 1993, transitioning from the former Flaxmere Intermediate School, which catered to students in Years 7-8. This change allowed for a broader educational framework extending from Years 7 through 13, accommodating a larger student body and offering a more comprehensive curriculum.
Having grown up in the community, Heeney’s familiarity with the school’s culture and values positions her uniquely to influence its future direction. Her experiences as a former student, combined with her professional background, are expected to resonate well with both current students and faculty.
In her new role, Heeney aims to foster an inclusive environment that supports the diverse needs of all students. She is committed to enhancing educational outcomes and ensuring that Flaxmere College remains a place where young people can thrive academically and personally.
The support from the community and stakeholders will be crucial as Heeney embarks on this journey. Her leadership is anticipated to bring fresh perspectives while honoring the school’s traditions and history.
As Flaxmere College continues to evolve, Heeney’s return reflects the cyclical nature of education, where former students can become leaders and role models for future generations.
