Mandy Myles Celebrated as Trailblazer at NZ Book Awards

Mandy Myles has been awarded the Titlepage Bookselling Trailblazer of the Year at the Aotearoa New Zealand Book Industry 2025 awards. As the founder of the online retailer Bookety Book Books, Myles distinguished herself through innovative strategies and dedication, impressing judges with her initiative and hard work.
The judges commended Myles for her bold business decisions, stating, “She has consciously and self-reflectively learned to work smarter, not harder, as a crucial lesson for long-term success.” They also highlighted her exceptional skills in securing sponsorships and creating beneficial partnerships, noting that her marketing and programming abilities are among the best in the industry.
“I am absolutely blown away; it’s such an honour to be recognised in an industry packed to the brim with legends,” Myles said upon receiving the award. Her journey into the world of online bookselling began unexpectedly during the Covid-19 lockdown.
Having previously studied fashion and worked in retail, including her time at 47 Frocks in Wānaka, Myles launched Bookety Book Books from her parents’ spare bedroom in August 2024. The idea emerged as she sought to make reading more engaging and accessible for busy individuals.
“I wanted to bring the feeling of community that independent bookstores create directly into people’s homes,” Myles explained. She began by sharing book recommendations on social media, which generated interest and inquiries about purchasing these titles. Recognising the demand, she aimed to provide an alternative to major online booksellers.
The curated online book range, designed for women aged 20 to 60, features sustainably packaged selections. Myles believes that reading fosters social connections. “Books spark such rich conversation, which inherently creates connection,” she stated. “Whether you loved a book or not, there’s always something to unpack with someone else who’s read it. Being able to discuss stories with others is one of the true joys of reading.”
Myles’ victory at the awards serves as a testament to her innovative approach and dedication to fostering a love for reading in her community. As the book industry continues to evolve, her contributions highlight the importance of adaptability and creativity in achieving success.
