Research Reveals Risks of Excessive Sleep on Health
Recent studies indicate that excessive sleep may pose health risks previously underestimated. Research findings reveal that individuals who sleep more than nine hours per night are at a significantly increased risk of a shorter lifespan. According to the data, these individuals are 34 percent more likely to experience early mortality compared to those who adhere to the recommended 8-9 hours of sleep per night.
Dr. Alex Bartle, an expert from the Sleep Well Clinic, emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy sleep duration. He advises that if a person consistently exceeds the ideal sleep window, it is crucial to consult a general practitioner. “If that’s not sufficient—particularly if you’re a snorer, for example—then you need to check for sleep apnoea,” he stated.
Understanding the Implications of Excessive Sleep
The correlation between excessive sleep and health risks has garnered attention in the medical community. While insufficient sleep has long been associated with numerous health issues, including obesity, cardiovascular disease, and impaired cognitive function, the new findings illustrate that too much sleep can also have detrimental effects.

As a result, individuals who frequently find themselves sleeping more than nine hours should monitor their overall health and consider potential underlying issues that may contribute to their excessive sleep patterns.

He notes that sleep disorders, particularly sleep apnoea, can lead to longer sleep times, creating a misleading perception of restfulness. “Sleep apnoea can disrupt the natural sleep cycle, leading to excessive daytime fatigue and a reliance on longer sleep durations,” he explained.

To promote optimal health, Dr. Bartle recommends several strategies for achieving restful sleep. He suggests establishing a consistent sleep schedule, creating a relaxing bedtime routine, and ensuring a comfortable sleep environment. Limiting screen time before bed and engaging in relaxation techniques, such as meditation or deep breathing exercises, can also enhance sleep quality.
