Liam Lawson Aims for Improvement After Friday Practice in Hungary
Liam Lawson faced challenges during the opening practice sessions for the Hungarian Grand Prix, finishing outside the top 10 in both rounds. Competing at the Hungaroring on August 4, 2023, Lawson secured 14th place in Free Practice One (FP1) and followed with a 15th place finish in Free Practice Two (FP2). These results come after a promising eighth-place finish at the previous weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix, marking his third points finish in six races.
Despite not achieving top placements, Lawson’s performance during the sessions revealed valuable insights. He completed a total of 58 laps across both FP1 and FP2, experimenting with all three tyre compounds. His times in these sessions showed he was competitive, finishing just 0.226 seconds behind the top 10 in FP1 and 0.292 seconds outside the top positions in FP2.
Lawson’s best lap time for the day was clocked at 1m 16.812s, which placed him 1.188 seconds behind the session leader, Lando Norris of McLaren. Norris dominated both practice sessions, setting a fastest time of 1m 15.624s, which was 0.291 seconds quicker than his teammate and championship leader, Oscar Piastri.
Assessing the Competition
With the competitive nature of Formula 1, Lawson’s results indicate the need for improvement as he looks ahead to qualifying on Saturday. The sessions highlighted the speed of the McLaren team, which has shown significant performance gains this season. Lawson’s ability to log extensive laps and adapt to different tyre strategies will be crucial as he prepares for the race.
The Hungarian Grand Prix is set against the backdrop of a season filled with intense competition and evolving team dynamics. With Lawson’s recent performances displaying promise, he will seek to harness this experience and push for a stronger showing in the upcoming race.
As the teams finalize their preparations, Lawson remains focused on refining his performance. The goal will be to not only break into the top 10 but also to continue building on his recent successes. With the right adjustments and a competitive mindset, the young driver has the potential to make a significant impact in Hungary.
