Jami-Lee Ross Aims for Political Comeback in Howick Local Board

Former National MP Jami-Lee Ross is making a significant attempt to re-enter the political arena by contesting a position on the Howick local board in Auckland’s Flat Bush subdivision. This move marks his return to local government after a five-year absence from the political scene.
Ross expressed his intentions in an interview with the *Herald*, stating he possesses the “past experience and skillset to be an effective advocate” for residents in Howick. He emphasized his familiarity with council and government processes, drawing on his previous six years on the Manukau City Council and a subsequent decade in Parliament.
“Having spent years in both local and national government, I understand what it takes to make a difference at the community level,” Ross noted. He believes that his background equips him to effectively represent the needs and concerns of Howick residents.
In 2016, Ross’s wife, Lucy Schwaner, attempted to secure a seat on the Howick local board but resigned shortly after being sworn in, following an unsuccessful bid for the chair position. Ross’s decision to stand for election reflects a desire to build on his previous experiences and contribute positively to local governance.
As the local body elections approach, Ross is focused on engaging with the community and addressing key issues faced by residents. His campaign will likely center around enhancing local services and ensuring effective representation for the diverse population of Howick.
Ross’s bid highlights a renewed interest in local governance, showcasing his commitment to serve at the grassroots level. With a solid foundation in political processes and community engagement, he aims to connect with voters and restore his political influence within the region.
