Senior Labour MP Megan Woods to Step Down from Wigram Seat

Senior Labour MP Megan Woods has announced that she will not seek re-election for the Wigram electorate in the upcoming 2026 election. In a statement shared on social media, Woods explained her decision followed extensive personal reflection. She has represented the Christchurch seat for the past 15 years and confirmed that she will continue to serve on Labour’s list.
Woods stated, “When I first stood, I made a commitment to myself: I’d only run if I could commit to serving the full six-year boundary cycle.” She emphasized that during the 2014 and 2019 elections, she could confidently affirm her commitment to a complete term. However, she expressed uncertainty about her ability to maintain that commitment this time around.
The announcement comes as Labour prepares for the next election cycle, with Woods indicating her intention to remain engaged in politics. By stepping down from her electorate seat, she joins a number of other politicians who have chosen to focus on different roles within their parties or public life.
Woods has played a significant role in shaping Labour’s policies over the years. Her departure from the Wigram seat will likely prompt discussions within the party regarding potential candidates to succeed her. As the Labour Party looks to solidify its position ahead of the election, the impact of Woods’ decision will be closely monitored.
While she will not contest her electorate seat, Woods affirmed her continued commitment to the Labour Party and its values. Her experience and background will remain assets as she supports her colleagues in the lead-up to the election.
The political landscape in Christchurch is evolving, and the Labour Party will need to consider its strategy to retain the Wigram seat as it approaches the 2026 election.
