Judges have traversed New Zealand over the past 43 days in search of the nation’s finest toasted sandwich. Contestants hailed from locations as diverse as Whangarei to Te Anau, showcasing the culinary creativity present across the country.

To qualify for the competition, participants needed to meet specific criteria. Each sandwich had to feature a toasted dough-based ingredient on both the top and bottom, and be prepared using methods such as grilling, pressing, or toasting in sandwich machines. Furthermore, every entry was required to include McLure’s Pickles and cheese as essential components, and sandwiches had to be served hot or warm, suitable for eating by hand.
