Full Moon Halo Captivates Skywatchers, Indicates Weather Change

Lovers of the night sky were treated to a captivating sight earlier this week as a full moon appeared surrounded by a luminous ring, known as a moon halo or 22-degree halo. This natural phenomenon, which many observers noticed, is a common occurrence that can signal changes in weather patterns.
According to Kgolofelo Dube, a meteorologist with MetService, a halo forms when light interacts with ice crystals present in the atmosphere. These crystals are typically found within thin, high-altitude clouds, such as cirrostratus. “As the light enters and exits these crystals, it bends, with most rays being deflected at an angle of around 22 degrees, creating a bright circular ring around the moon,” Dube explained.
Understanding Lunar Halos
Lunar halos are not limited to winter months; they can occur throughout the year. However, they are more frequently observed during the colder months when ice crystals are more prevalent in the atmosphere. This celestial display is a result of specific atmospheric conditions, making it a fascinating subject for both casual observers and meteorological experts.
Dube emphasized that while the visual beauty of a moon halo is striking, it can also serve as an indicator of impending weather changes. The presence of cirrostratus clouds may suggest moisture in the atmosphere, which can lead to precipitation in the following days.
Skywatchers are encouraged to remain vigilant for such phenomena, as they can provide early clues about shifting weather conditions. With the right conditions, those looking up at the night sky may spot these halos multiple times throughout the year, adding to the allure of lunar observations.
In summary, the recent appearance of a moon halo has captured the attention of many, highlighting both the beauty and the science behind this atmospheric phenomenon. As winter progresses, those interested in astronomy and meteorology alike will have opportunities to witness more of these stunning displays.
