KJ Apa Reflects on Fame and Embracing His Kiwi Roots

New Zealand actor KJ Apa has opened up about his journey to fame in Hollywood and the emotional connection he has with his homeland. After nearly a decade since his breakthrough role as Kane Jenkins on Shortland Street, the 28-year-old actor is navigating his identity as both a performer and a Kiwi.
In a recent interview, Apa shared that he has not used his New Zealand accent in a professional setting since his departure from Shortland Street. While he has adopted an American accent for his roles, including his portrayal of Archie Andrews in the popular Netflix series Riverdale, he expressed a sense of nervousness about returning to his roots. “The last time I used my New Zealand accent was on Shorty,” he remarked, highlighting the shifting dynamics of his identity.
Embracing Kiwi Identity in New Role
Apa’s latest project, the romantic drama The Map That Leads to You, presents a unique opportunity for him to reconnect with his heritage. In this film, he plays Jack, a young Kiwi traveler retracing his grandfather’s journeys through Europe. Interestingly, the character’s accent was not specified in the script, allowing Apa to make a bold choice to use his natural voice. This decision blurs the lines between KJ the actor and KJ the person, showcasing a more authentic side of himself.
The actor’s decision to embrace his New Zealand accent in this role reflects a broader theme of identity and belonging. Although he has gained a large following in the United States, he acknowledges the emotional weight his home country carries for him. “New Zealand brings me to tears,” he confessed, illustrating the deep connection he feels to his roots.
Journey from Local Fame to International Stardom
Since leaving Shortland Street in 2015, KJ Apa’s career trajectory has soared. He gained international recognition for his role in A Dog’s Purpose, where he portrayed Ethan, a character that resonated with audiences around the world. This role, along with his work in Riverdale, has established him as a prominent figure in the entertainment industry.
Despite his success in Hollywood, Apa remains grounded and reflective. He often grapples with the duality of his identity as an actor in a foreign land while yearning to honor his New Zealand heritage. As he continues to take on diverse roles, the actor hopes to inspire others to embrace their own backgrounds and voices.
As KJ Apa moves forward in his career, he remains committed to showcasing the richness of his Kiwi identity. His latest role serves not only as a professional challenge but also as a personal journey back to his roots, reaffirming the importance of authenticity in a world driven by perceptions and expectations.
