The 2025 Pacific Music Awards celebrated outstanding achievements in Pacific music, with South Auckland musician Shane Walker emerging as a standout winner. He secured two prestigious awards: best Pacific male artist and best Pacific song for his hit single, “Believe.” This recognition highlights Walker’s unique blend of reggae, roots, and gospel, enriched by influences from the Cook Islands and te reo Māori.

Walker, who belongs to the Tainui, Ngāti Mahanga, and Ngāti Whātua iwi, gained significant traction in New Zealand music circles with his summer hit, “Coasty Girl.” In an interview with Te Ao News, he described music as both a remedy and a legacy for future generations, stating, “Music for me is a remedy, but it also is like my life’s work and like a diary.”

At the awards ceremony held in March 2025, Walker faced competition from a diverse array of talented artists. He was also nominated for best Pacific roots/reggae artist, which was awarded to Lomez Brown, and best gospel artist, which went to Brotherhood Musiq.

Aaradhna and Other Notable Winners Shine Bright

The evening saw Aaradhna, who received four nominations, winning the award for best Pacific female artist. Known for her soulful R&B style, Aaradhna’s heritage includes Indian and Samoan roots. She previously garnered attention at the Aotearoa Music Awards, where she was named best soul/R&B artist.

The night also recognized Sam V as the best Pacific soul/R&B artist, while the best Pacific group award was presented to A.R.T for their song “When He Was Mine (Pele Fo’i Mai).” The best Pacific hip hop artist was awarded to Kenzie from Welly, and Jordyn with a Why took home the title of best Pacific music album for “Hibiscus Moon, Love & Justice.”

The best Pacific music video award went to Tha Movement for their captivating piece “The Lecture,” directed by Samson Rambo.

Acknowledging Cultural Contributions

One of the evening’s highlights was the presentation of the Pacific Peoples Lifetime Achievement Award to Opetaia Foa’i, celebrated as one of the South Pacific’s most influential cultural and musical ambassadors. Foa’i also won the award for best Pacific language, further underscoring his significant contributions to the arts.

The 2025 Pacific Music Awards not only honored individual achievements but also celebrated the rich tapestry of Pacific culture and music. This year’s winners reflect a diverse and vibrant community, showcasing the depth and talent that continues to thrive in the Pacific music scene.
